Meet Cara: Student Beans' VP Business Development, US
In the latest in our Meet the Team series, we chat to Cara, whose exciting Student Beans journey has taken her across the Atlantic to our New York office. Here's what she had to say about her time at the company so far, her tips for success in business development, and what she's looking forward to in the year ahead.
Can you tell us a bit about your story so far at Student Beans?
I moved to London from Swindon, where I’d worked in a lead gen company doing something similar, but a different industry. I joined Student Beans and started working as a Business Development Manager for the UK sector. After a couple of years we saw the opportunity to grow in the US, so I moved over to the US team and relocated to our New York office.
What has been the highlight of your time at Student Beans?
Definitely moving over to the US and growing our business over here. My favourite part of the job is going to events, because it’s fun and you get to actually meet the people that you’re speaking to. Travelling and seeing cities is always cool. The best ones I’ve been to were Affiliate Summit West in Vegas and eTail West in Palm Springs.
What's it like working in the Student Beans New York office?
We want to bring the culture of the business over here, so it’s a nice, friendly office. We get beer and bagels, we have socials. We work pretty central, between the Flat Iron and Empire State buildings. The area is full of bars, restaurants, parks - it’s a really good location and so easy to commute to.
What are you most looking forward to at work in 2018?
The company is growing so fast, it’s hard to predict where we’ll be in a year’s time! I’m looking forward to seeing some of the awesome brands that we’ve signed up go live.
What do you think sets Student Beans apart from other companies in the sector?
The culture. We’re very friendly, flexible and just a nice, easy-going company to work for. And in terms of our product, there’s no-one else who comes close to what we do - it’s the best out there.
What’s the no.1 thing that makes you stay at Student Beans?
The growth and opportunities. As a team we really feel part of the company’s success, and we’re given the chance to try different things. The company’s open to new ideas so you feel like you’re contributing to its growth.
What’s your top tip for people interested in working in business development?
You need to be hungry, resilient, persistent and enjoy speaking to people. You also must be open to learning from others.
