Tell us about your role...

I joined the Student Beans team to grow the business as our first ever recruiter when we were only around 20 people. Fast forward a couple of years, we are now over 100 staff with offices across London, Birmingham, Manchester, New York, Melbourne and the Philippines. I now work as Head of Talent and lead a team of recruiters, overseeing our international growth as we aim to reach 400 heads by 2021!

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day to day is very varied - I could be working with the business to understand our current and future recruitment needs, acting as a brand ambassador whereby I share our story and culture with candidates, headhunting the best talent on the market, guiding candidates through the recruitment process, supporting our hiring managers or ensuring my team have the support and tools in place to do their best work and succeed.

Why did you decide to join Student Beans?

The ambition of the company and the opportunities this created for my personal growth. I had the chance to set up the recruitment function, build my own team and grow what was a small team of people into an international business with hundreds of staff. I could see it was a challenge but this was exciting - it was a huge opportunity and I just couldn’t turn it down!

How does it differ from other places you’ve worked?

There’s a huge difference in our culture compared to other places I’ve worked; our culture is one of the reasons why I joined and equally one of the reasons that I’m still here. I love how transparent we are; there’s no internal politics (you can’t make a cup of tea without someone asking how you are!), we’re incredibly collaborative and there is a clear company strategy and direction.

We’re also non-hierarchical; everyone here is empowered to have a voice and make autonomous decisions - if you want to work in a business where you can make a direct impact, then Student Beans is absolutely the right place for you.

What’s your favourite memory from your time at Student Beans?

Of all the great memories I have from my time here, my favourite has to be in our weekly Huddle a few weeks ago (the Huddle is when the entire business comes together in one room - in London anyway and then all of our international offices join on the screen!) and each department provides an update. In this meeting, I got to share with the business that we’d officially reached over 100 staff!

It was amazing to see how far we’ve come; the space where we hold our Huddle in our London office was full to bursting and you can see the other offices on the screen are jam-packed too! It was a very special moment and great to recognise the hard work both my team and the wider business have done.

We encourage our team to ‘Stay SHARP’ in everything they do; what do our values mean to you?

Our values are representative of everyone in the business, and of our business as a whole - we strive for success but at the same time we value those around us and have respect for others. A lot of companies out there pride themselves on growing fast and being successful but lose their culture along the way. For us, our values are the golden thread that runs through everything we do and are the principles that we recruit and build our team around. We are ambitious and we’re growing fast, but it’s important to us we stay true to our values.

What are you excited about this year?

This year is really exciting! My team is growing, so I’m looking forward to seeing the impact an entire team of recruiters can have on Student Beans. I’ve been here for two years and the growth from the day I joined to now is incredible - I’m excited to see how the business continues to evolve and grow.

As our Head of Talent, what would you say to candidates thinking about joining our team?

If you’re looking for a business that will help you take your career to another level, in an environment where you’re empowered and encouraged to do your best work and achieve your potential whilst also making great relationships along the way, then this is the company for you!

I’d describe us as being commercially-driven whilst having a family feel. We’re a tight-knit team, we work hard, we have high standards and we expect everyone to do their best work but we have a huge amount of fun along the way.

Finally, tell us something about you that surprises people!

So anyone who knows me (and my love of high heels) would probably be surprised to learn that I used to play the drums!
