Meet Adam: Financial Controller at Student Beans

In the latest of our Meet the Team series, we introduce you to Adam, who joined the business this year in the role of Financial Controller. Here's what he had to say about his time at Student Beans so far and our exciting plans for the future.

Can you tell us a bit about your story so far at Student Beans?

I joined Student Beans after having financial roles in engineering and media companies. What attracted me was the growth mindset in the company and the company culture. The way employees spoke about the company resonated with me. I joined at the beginning of 2018 and have not been disappointed. The growth in the company has been phenomenal in the last six months, and the next six months look even more exciting. The people I work with inspire me every day, and I have been able to work with people across the business on projects to improve almost every area of what we do.

You're one of our newer team members - how do you think Student Beans has grown and changed in the six months since you joined?

What I think is great about my experience so far is what hasn't changed. In my time we have opened the New York office, expanded out to Australia, hired a large amount of people, and done some great things. However throughout this period of change we have held onto our company culture, which was one of the main things that attracted me to Student Beans in the first place. This means that despite new faces in our weekly meetings, and more video calls to other parts of the world, I still feel a unity with my colleagues and common purpose.

What are you most looking forward to at work in 2018?

I'm looking forward to meeting the challenges that our expansion plans will throw up. Firstly making sure that our financial policies and procedures work at scale as we bring on many more staff in multiple locations but also ensuring the business stays compliant in the territories it operates in. If we can get those right then we will be able to grow the business rapidly and successfully.

What do you think sets Student Beans apart from other companies in the sector?

For me it is the people and the culture, and importantly what this allows us to do. The company feels flat hierarchically, so that anyone feels able to talk to anyone else, and this leads to interactions that produce some really interesting projects and work. It fosters closer relationships across the business and fosters innovation.

What would you say to someone considering applying for a role at Student Beans?

I would tell them to look at our culture, it is so important here (if you hadn't realised that from reading the rest of my answers!), and if it speaks to you then this is a great place to work. I would also tell them that there are more opportunities here than you can put on a job advert. As we grow areas, teams and countries opportunities will open up, and you will also have the opportunity here to work with different parts of the business and try new things to improve any area. Finally I would tell them that despite the great perks we do have on offer, nothing is better than being truly satisfied with your job every day, and that is what is on offer working here.
