Meet Jack: Product Manager at Student Beans

This week we’re introducing you to Jack, who leads our Product team at Student Beans. He gives an inside look at what it’s really like to work here and the challenges he’s excited to take on in 2019.

What has been the highlight of your time at Student Beans so far?

There are so many to choose from, but for me it has to be building out the Product team. In a fairly short period of time we’ve grown in multiple areas - product management, data analysis, and product design - resulting in a really strong unit. Such quick expansion shows just how much the business is committed to growing and improving the product for our users, and this really excites me!

Which projects have you most enjoyed working on in 2018?

Again I’m spoilt for choice, but the “near me” product we’ve had running for a couple of months is the highlight. It’s great to see how much our users love it, and how it’s changing the way they go about accessing the great offers we have available in-store - both on the website and our mobile apps.

Equally pleasing is how much of a cross-team effort it’s been, as we’ve not just built the product, but grown our range of offers and associated venues - resulting in a product proposition which is excellent right across the UK. I’m from Preston and it’s great to check the app when I go back up north to see just how many high street discounts we have in my old stomping ground!

What are you most looking forward to at work in the year ahead?

I’m really looking forward to the challenge of growing the product internationally. You won’t be successful if you simply whack what works for the UK into different markets, you need to adapt and research what’s required in order to make the desired impact, both from a product and brand perception perspective.

What do you think sets Student Beans apart from other companies in the sector?

We really do care about both our users and the clients we work with. Our core values are integral to us, not just when we’re at work but in everything that we do - and I think that can be seen in how we conduct ourselves, the products that we build, and how adaptable we are in making sure we deliver results.

What’s the no.1 thing that makes you stay at Student Beans?

I imagine most people would say the same here - it’s the culture. Everyone is extremely friendly, we have regular socials, and there’s a real togetherness. I know everyone’s names, and have met pretty much everybody in person having travelled to all our UK offices on multiple occasions. This may sound trivial, but it helps foster that sense of togetherness I highlighted earlier

What’s your top tip for people interested in working in product management?

Ironically I kind of “fell” into product management - but I can’t imagine doing anything else now. There are three key things I guess I’d advise anyone looking to get into the sector though:

  1. Know your product

  2. Know your stakeholders

  3. Know what your customers are doing
